If you want to drive your own car or rental car in Kenya and you want to get your own Kenyan driving licence, this is possible by following these steps:

Create NTSA portal for transport information

Conversion of foreign driver's licence using TIMS

In order to convert a foreign driver's licence to a Kenyan driver's licence, you must hold a valid driver's licence for the relevant class of motor vehicle, issued by a competent authority in a member state of the European Union or the British Commonwealth and be over 18 years of age.

After logging in, select the National Transport and Safety Authority tab and then click on the Create application tab. Click the (plus sign) on the driver's licence application and then click Convert foreign licence application.
Fill in the required details that include:

  • Corresponding vehicle classes as on your foreign driving licence
  • Full name
  • Residential address
  • Phone numbers
  • E-mail address
  • Postal address
  • Country of issue of foreign driver's licence

After reviewing the details and confirming that the information you have provided is correct, click submit.
A fee of Ksh 750 will be charged for the process. Payment instructions will be generated automatically and provided online. Payment methods include mobile money, visa and debit transfers.

After you have paid and submitted a successful application, you will be able to download and print your paid invoice from the payment menu.

Visit NTSA

After submitting all the required information, you will receive a notification when to visit the NTSA offices at Hillpark Building, Upperhill in Nairobi to collect your new licence and/or complete the application process. You should be prepared to present the following documents on arrival:

  • Original passport and copy
  • Original foreign driving licence and copy
  • Foreigner certificate
  • Work permit/ dependent passport
  • two passport photographs
  • e-citizen payment invoice

It is advisable to report to their office early in the morning as it can be very busy later in the afternoon.

Confirmation of personal details.

At the NTSA counter, the agent will ask you to log in to your NTSA portal to verify that the details you have provided match those in the system. You'll also need to be prepared to take a simple driving test at the NTSA facility to verify your driving skills.

Pay for your driver's licence

The Ksh750 you paid earlier was for the registration forms. After the NTSA has determined that you are a competent driver, you will need to pay an additional Ksh 3000 for the new driver's licence via Lipa na M-pesa.

Also, make sure you have at least 110 Ksh extra on your phone to cover the service fee and transaction costs. The NTSA payment bill number is 206206.

Once the payment has been made, you will be issued a receipt.

Enter biometrics and signature

Before you leave the NTSA office to wait for your licence, they will capture your biometrics in their system and make copies of your passport photo and digital signature.

Receive the digital driver's licence

Once you've completed the above process, it will take five business days for your digital driver's licence to be ready. The NTSA will send you a notification to let you know when to pick up your licence in person at their offices.
